London Wildlife Trust’s newest project, Water for Wildlife is a four year project, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Thames Water, aiming to delve a little deeper into London’s freshwaters. London’s freshwater habitats

not only provide an important refuge for some of the city’s most iconic species but also provide great opportunities for London’s citizens to experience nature in the city. Increased pressures on our freshwater habitats, including pollution, flood defense measures and fragmentation however mean it’s more important than ever to understand these systems and the species they support.

Working with the British Dragonfly Society, we’re particularly keen to find out how our Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) are using freshwater habitats in the capital. Not only do these dazzling creatures look amazing, often in golds, electric blues, ruby reds, and metallic hues, darting, skimming and zooming across the water, but they are extremely mobile insects and strong fliers. This means that they can colonize new or improved habitats and respond to changes in climate quickly.

We’re asking everyone to visit their local freshwater site and to let us know what they see. You can submit records to our Dragonfly Detectives citizen science survey or you can join one of our organized surveys across London, including at the Brent Reservoir. Our surveys aren’t only confined to adult Odonata flying from April to September. In the cooler months, we will also be taking a look at the lives of larval Odonata, ferocious predators that can hunt in our freshwaters for 1-2 years before emergence.

As well as surveying opportunities and training in the ecology and identification of the flora and fauna of our freshwaters, there will also be opportunities for volunteers to join the Water for Wildlife Team as practical conservation volunteers, helping us to improve freshwater habitats across the capital.
