18. Hanwell Backwater Habitat Creation

Theme: Making Rivers More Natural

  • By 2027, it will have a ‘good’ ability to support wildlife
  • Transforming up to 10 kilometres of heavily modified river to a more natural condition by 2021

Project description

This community-led project championed by the Brent River and Canals Society in partnership with London Wildlife Trust, will create new backwater habitat at Hanwell between Boles Meadow and the main River Brent, providing an important refuge area for aquatic wildlife during high flows or pollution incidents.

Scoping and feasibility studies completed in 2018 have identified options that will increase ecological resilience and biodiversity within a new wetland area.

Permitting and outline designs are in place for delivery, pending match funding.
